A multi-scale model for CO

WEI, V. RUDOLPH, C. T. WEI, Y. QIN

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 20-25 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0138-0

Abstract: This paper presents a multi-scale model to simulate the multicomponent gas diffusion and flow in bulk coals for CO sequestration enhanced coalbed methane recovery. The model is developed based on a bi-dispersed structure model by assuming that coal consists of microporous micro-particles, meso/macro-pores and open microfractures. The bi-disperse diffusion theory and the Maxwell-Stefan approach were incorporated in the model, providing an improved simulation of the CH —CO /CH —N counter diffusion dynamics. In the model, the counter diffusion process is numerically coupled with the flow of the mixture gases occurring within macro-pores or fractures in coal so as to account for the interaction between diffusion and flow in gas transport through coals. The model was validated by both experimental data from literature and our CO flush tests, and shows an excellent agreement with the experiments. The results reveal that the gas diffusivities, in particular the micro-pore diffusivities are strongly concentration-dependent.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF CROP-LIVESTOCK FARMS IN AFRICA

Mariana C. RUFINO, Charles K. K. GACHENE, Rodrigue V. C. DIOGO, James HAWKINS, Alice A.

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 175-181 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2020362

Abstract: Crop-livestock farms across Africa are highly variable due to in agroecological and socioeconomic factors, the latter shaping the demand and supply of livestock products. Crop-livestock farms in Africa in the 21st century are very different from most mixed farms elsewhere in the world. African crop-livestock farms are smaller in size, have fewer livestock, lower productivity and less dependency on imported feed than farms in most countries of Europe, the Americas and the intensive agricultural systems of Asia. This paper discusses the role African crop-livestock farms have in the broader socio-agricultural economy, and how these are likely to change adapting to pressures brought on by the intensification of food systems. This intensification implies increasing land productivity (more food per hectare), often leading to more livestock heads per farm, producing fertilized feeds in croplands and importing feed supplements from the market. This discussion includes (1) the links between crop yields, soil fertility and crop-livestock integration, (2) the increasing demand for livestock products and the land resources required to meet to this demand, and (3) the opportunities to integrate broader societal goals into the development of crop-livestock farms. There is ample room for development of crop-livestock farms in Africa, and keeping integration as part of the development will help prevent many of the mistakes and environmental problems related to the intensification of livestock production observed elsewhere in the world. This development can integrate biodiversity, climate change adaptation and mitigation to the current goals of increasing productivity and food security. The inclusion of broader goals could help farmers access the level of finance required to implement changes.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2021, Volume 22, Issue 7,   Pages 1002-1009 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000149

Abstract: This work presents the application of the technique named signal analysis based on using density of maxima to analyze brushless direct current motors. It uses a correlation coefficient estimated from the density of maxima of the current signal. This study demonstrates in experiments the speed estimation of a brushless motor on a testbench and in a small flying drone. The experimental results demonstrate that it is possible to estimate the speed in 97.8% of the cases and to detect failure in 82.75% of the analyzed cases.

Adsorption of 1,3-propanediol from synthetic mixture using polymeric resin as adsorbents

SHOTIPRUK, V. TANTAYAKOM, P. PRASITCHOKE, C. MUANGNAPOH

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 52-57 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0087-7

Abstract: The aim of this work was to separate 1,3-PDO from a synthetic mixture using polymeric resins, Amberlite XAD-7 and XAD-16 resins. The equilibrium adsorption of 1,3-PDO onto two polymeric resins were investigated in binary and tertiary systems. Experimental results of binary component adsorption equilibrium indicated that the adsorption capacity ( ) of 1,3-PDO at 160 g/L onto XAD-7 and XAD-16 was 835.96 and 584.61 mg 1,3-PDO/g dry resin, respectively. The adsorption isotherms were closely predicted by the Langmuir-Freundlich model among the two isotherm model tested. The value of n of 1,3-PDO adsorbed on XAD-7 are much higher than those on XAD-16. This result suggested that XAD-7 resin has a higher affinity for the 1,3-PDO adsorption than XAD-16 resin. Moreover, the value of adsorption capacity of 1,3-PDO in the binary and tertiary component were compared at the same conditions. In the tertiary system, although the selectivity of 1,3-PDO from XAD-7 was approximately six times higher than XAD-16, the adsorption capacity of 1,3-PDO at 160 g/L onto XAD-16 was higher than XAD-7. Interestingly, the reusability of XAD-7 and XAD-16 resins in the three cycle times shows a slight loss of adsorption capacity. Furthermore, the investigation about desorption by an ethanol/water mixture at 50% ( / ) indicated that the desorption yield of 1,3-PDO from XAD-7 was lower than XAD-16 resin for both the binary and tertiary component. This was due to the more favorable adsorption characteristics of XAD-7 resin than XAD-16 resin.

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2015, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 301-305 doi: 10.1007/s11465-015-0344-z

Abstract:

This article describes a study on a non-thermal plasma device to treat exhaust gases in an internal combustion engine. Several tests using a plasma device to treat exhaust gases are conducted on a Honda GX200-196 cm3 engine at different rotational speeds. A plasma reactor could be efficient in degrading nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Monoxide and carbon dioxide treatment is minimal. However, achieving 1%–3% degradation may be interesting to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Spatial targeting evaluation of energy and environmental performance of waste-to-energy processing

Walmsley, Yee V. Fan, Jiří J. Klemeš, Simon J. Perry

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 4,   Pages 731-744 doi: 10.1007/s11705-018-1772-1

Abstract:

Waste-to-energy supply chains are important potential contributors to minimising the environmental impacts of municipal solid waste by reducing the amounts of waste sent to landfill, as well as the fossil fuel consumption and environmental footprints. Accounting for the spatial and transport properties of the waste-to-energy supply chains is crucial for understanding the problem and improving the supply chain designs. The most significant challenge is the distributed nature of the waste generation and the household energy demands. The current work proposes concepts and a procedure for targeting the size of the municipal solid waste collection zone as the first step in the waste-to-energy supply chains synthesis. The formulated concepts and the provided case study reveal trends of reducing the net greenhouse gas savings and energy recovery by increasing the collection zone size. Population density has a positive correlation with the greenhouse gas saving and energy recovery performance. For smaller zone size the energy recovery from waste approaches and in some cases may surpass the energy spent on waste transportation. The energy recovery and greenhouse gas savings remain significant even for collection zones as large as 200 km2. The obtained trends are discussed and key directions for future work are proposed.

A guide to shortening the time from submission to publication in

Jiao Zhang, Xia Huang, Jiming Hao, John C. Crittenden

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 2, doi: 10.1007/s11783-020-1231-3

Abstract: Authors want to publish their work as soon as possible. However, the manuscript processing time increases if the manuscript does not meet the journal requirements. Our analysis of manuscripts submitted to Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering from November 2018 to July 2019 shows that the processing time was increased up to 33 days because the manuscripts: (1) had inconsistent formatting of citations, references, and units, (2) exceeded the word limit, (3) were missing information such as the graphical abstract, (4) plagiarized other papers, and (5) had too many tables and figures. Herein, we explain how authors can avoid these issues and decrease the manuscript processing time.

Abstract: Human-agent societies refer to applications where virtual agents and humans coexist and interact transparently into a fully integrated environment. One of the most important aspects in this kind of applications is including emotional states of the agents (humans or not) in the decision-making process. In this sense, this paper presents the applicability of the JaCalIVE (Jason Cartago implemented intelligent virtual environment) framework for developing this kind of society. Specifically, the paper presents an ambient intelligence application where humans are immersed into a system that extracts and analyzes the emotional state of a human group. A social emotional model is employed to try to maximize the welfare of those humans by playing the most appropriate music in every moment.

LAND-USE INTENSIFICATION TRENDS IN THE RIO DE LA PLATA REGION OF SOUTH AMERICA: TOWARD SPECIALIZATION OR RECOUPLING CROP AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION

Paulo César DE FACCIO CARVALHO, Jean Víctor SAVIAN, Tomas DELLA CHIESA, William DE SOUZA FILHO, José

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 97-110 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2020380

Abstract: The Rio de la Plata region comprises central Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. Modern agriculture developed around 1900 with recent decades being characterized by the advance of cropping areas over native grasslands. Highly specialized agriculture has decoupled crop and livestock production but has succeeded in intensifying yields. However, significant losses of ecosystem services have been reported. Thus, questions have been raised on the sustainability of this pathway. A glance at world regions that have experienced similar trends suggests that an urgent course correction is needed. A major concern has been the lack of diversity in regions with highly specialized agriculture, promoting renewed interest in integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), not only because ICLS are more diverse than specialized systems, but also because they are rare examples of reconciliation between agroecosystem intensification and environmental quality. Consequently, this paper discusses alternatives to redesign multifunctional landscapes based on ICLS. Recent data provide evidence that recoupling crop and animal production increases the resilience of nutrient cycling functions and economic indicators to external stressors, enabling these systems to face climate-market uncertainty and reconcile food production with the provision of diverse ecosystem services. Finally, these concepts are exemplified in case studies where this perspective has been successfully applied.

Autoimmunity in acute ischemic stroke and the role of blood—brain barrier: the dark side or the light one?

Nikolay V. Tsygan, Alexandr P. Trashkov, Igor V. Litvinenko, Viktoriya A. Yakovleva, Alexandr V.

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 4,   Pages 420-426 doi: 10.1007/s11684-019-0688-6

Abstract: This article presents a synopsis of the current data on the mechanisms of blood—brain barrier (BBB) alteration and autoimmune response in acute ischemic stroke. Most researchers confirm the relationship between the severity of immunobiochemical changes and clinical outcome of acute ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is accompanied by aseptic inflammation, which alters the brain tissue and exposes the co-stimulatory molecules of the immune system and the neuronal antigens. To date, BBB is not considered the border between the immune system and central nervous system, and the local immune subsystems are found within and behind the BBB. BBB disruption contributes to the leakage of brain autoantigens and induction of secondary autoimmune response to neuronal antigens and long-term inflammation. Glymphatic system function is altered and jeopardized both in hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke types. The receptors of innate immunity (toll-like receptor-2 and toll-like receptor-4) are also involved in acute ischemia—reperfusion injury. Immune response is related to the key processes of blood clotting and fibrinolysis. At the same time, the stroke-induced immune activation may promote reparation phenomena in the brain. Subsequent research on the reduction of the acute ischemic brain injury through the target regulation of the immune response is promising.
